As you leave Rome driving North along the Highway of the Sun, you will cross the regions of Lazio and Umbria before reaching you destination: Florence. City of Etruscan-Roman origins, it flourished in the Middle Ages as a free comune. Florence is overwhelming in its wealth of art , culture and history. If you are interested in architecture, for example, you don’t need to visit any museum: many of the palaces and squares are masterpieces of their own. Florence, cradle of the Renaissance, is one of the most beautiful city in the world, one of the Unesco heritage sites and the capital of Tuscany and has been called “the Athens of the Middle Ages”. Situated on both banks of the Arno river and surrounded by the Appenine hills, the city is the home of Dante and the Medici Family, where the Renaissance art of the 16th century started, the birthplace of great artists like Michelangelo, Brunelleschi and Botticelli. Florence’s museums, palaces, and churches house some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world. The Historic Centre of Florence attracts millions of tourists each year and it is an important city in Italian fashion, being ranked in the top 50 fashion capitals of the world.
With this tour you will have opportunity to admire the Piazzale Michelangelo for an overview of the town’s tile roofs, steeples and domes. Re-board your van and drive to the Accademia Gallery, Europe’s first school of drawing founded in mid 16th century, to see several masterpieces including Michelangelo’s statue of David (Please not that the tickets it’s not included. Afterwards, proceed to the very heart of Florence and stop in the Cathedral square to view the Duomo, the Baptistry and Giotto’s Bell Tower.The impact and magnitude of the Cathedral are overwhelming. This splendid building adorned with green, red and white marble houses priceless works of art including Michelangelo’s Deposition.
Proceed through some of Florence’s most elegant streets to the city’s you will visit the largest square Piazza della Signoria wich was the center of the political life since the 14th century. The sculptures in Piazza della Signoria have political connotations, for example the famous David (the original is in the Galleria dell’Accademia)
Also you will have to opportunity to visit the Uffizi Gallery building in the form of a horseshoe extending from Piazza della Signoria to the Arno river. The Uffizi consists of 44 rooms housing paintings of Cimabue, Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci. (Please not that the tickets it’s not included. After the lunch break you can visit the Ponte Vecchio meaning ‘old bridge’. It is home to gold and jewerly vendors and if time permits, you may go shopping before heading to the Basilica of Santa Croce. This 13th century church is the burial place of some of the most illustrious Italians, such as Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, and Rossini, and it is also known for its frescoes by masters such as Giotto, Gaddi and Taddeo.
In the late afternoon our driver will pick you up for your return to Rome.
