Tour Duration: 8 hours
On this eight-hour shore excursion, you will be plunged in the typical Italian lifestyle, exploring the beautiful city of Siena and walking through the medieval streets of San Gimignano. Your private driver will pick you up at the port of Livorno and take you on a picturesque two-hour drive in the Tuscan countryside. The first stop is Siena an incredibly beautiful city, with its colourful streets and a beautiful gothic cathedral – the Duomo is one of the most spectacular in Italy and one of the few to have been built south of the Alps in full gothic style. You will see “Piazza del Campo” one of the most beautiful squares in the world, where the famous Palio di Siena horse race takes place twice a year. The shell- shaped square is the heart of Siena since the 14th century and it is still the hub of the city for both locals and tourists. On the square, the impressive Public Palace, where governors have lived for over 700 years and the cathedral, considered one of the most impressive italian churches, it had been built between 1215 and 1263 over an earlier structure. The cathedral is in the form of a Latin cross with a slight projecting dome and bell tower. Both exteriors and interiors are decorated in white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, black and white being the symbolic colors of Siena. After the visit of Siena you will have some free time and your driver will suggest you where to have lunch depending on what you prefer. Then the excursion will continue to San Gimignano. This village has rightfully earned its reputation as the Medieval Manhattan of Tuscany. It’s history is ancient as it was founded in the 3rd century BC by the Etruscans, then we can trace back time thanks to some records of the 10th century when it adopted the name of the bishop of Modena who defended it from Attila’s Huns, Saint Geminianus. Due to its location along the “Via Francigena”, San Gimignano’s wealth and architectural development flourished during the 11th and 13th centuries. Unlike many Italian medieval villages that have lost their towers due to urban renewal, wars or natural disasters, San Gimignano preserved 14 of its original 72 towers which have become its international symbol and pride. Its historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In San Gimignano, with its magnificent towers, you will feel under the spell of a medieval town, walking through the narrow and winding alleys. After San Gimignano, on the way back to Livorno, we will drive you in the Tuscan countryside, dotted with large olive groves, extended vineyards, country roads lined with cypresses and “umbrella trees” (Pines).
