Best Rome Tour offers the best of history and art in Rome, take the chance and visit the most important sites of the eternal city. Enjoy a magnificent of the Colosseum, the most important Roman amphitheater and the largest in the world, it could hold a number of spectators between 50,000 and 80,000 units. The imposing character of this monument makes it the symbol of Rome and Italy throughout the world. Next stop of the tour will be the Capitoline, the lowest and the least extensive of the seven hills of Rome, since ancient times the hub of political and religious activities of the city. Then the tour will bring you to the Circus Maximus, an ancient Roman circus in the valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills. Here games were held and it was especially dedicated to horse racing. The tour continues and you will admire beautiful squares and picturesque alleys. The first is Navona Square (Piazza Navona), built on the ashes of the Stadium of Domitian and used in antiquity for different kinds of athletic contests and competitions. Today the square is usually crowded with street artists, painters and portraitists. Do not miss the Fountain of the Four Rivers and the Church of St. Agnes in Agony, a triumph of Baroque. On feet you will easily reach the Pantheon, the temple dedicated to the gods of ancient Rome which boasts several primacies: it is the best preserved, has the largest masonry dome in the history of architecture, is considered the forerunner of all modern places of worship and during the years, it was the most imitated. Then you will see the Trevi Fountain, in rococo style, overlooking Piazza di Trevi. Before you leave, do not forget to throw a coin in the fountain. Custom has it that travellers doing this will one day return to the eternal city. Those seeking a little romance, perhaps even an Italian love, should then toss a second, third coin to make sure wedding bells will soon be chiming. This fountain has been the scenography of a famous scene from “La Dolce Vita” from Federico Fellini: a provocative Anita Ekberg in a long black evening dress, calls out for Marcello Mastroianni, “Marcello, come Here!” as she glides through the fountain’s sparkling waters). Another essential stop is Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna): the ocher-colored buildings encircle the Bernini’s fountain and the Spanish steps. The church Trinita dei Monti contributes to the creation of a refined atmosphere. Ancient home of famous poets such as John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley, the square today is a cultural heritage of inestimable value. After a break for lunch, our tour will focus on the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’ Square. Enter the vast expanse of St. Peter’s Square through Bernini’s colonnades into Christendom’s largest church resting on 800 pillars and housing 44 altars. Please note that if mass is taking place in the Basilica, the entrance may be restricted. Another thing that you should consider when planning a visit is that the Museums are closed on Saturday afternoon and Sunday (except for the last Sunday of the month). In St. Peter’s Basilica it is possible to visit the grave of the popes as well as to climb up to the top of the dome, from where you will surely enjoy a beautiful sight of Rome. Return to the ship by 5:00 pm.
