Tour Duration: 9 hours
When your cruise ship docks in Trapani, you will meet your private driver at the port and set off in the comfort of a luxury vehicle to explore the most ancient and fascinating places of Trapani and Erice. The first stop is Trapani. Located on the western coast of Sicily, Trapani is a fishing and ferry port with a long history. Visiting Trapani is really very interesting, at every corner you will find monuments, churches and buildings revealing the town’s history over the centuries. The city of Trapani, also called “two seas” because located between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Strait of Sicily, is a place rich in natural beauty and architectural works. The city is situated below the promontory of Mount Erice, from which you can enjoy the sight of the Egadi Islands. The town is renowned for its fine seafood and Sicilian cuisine. On the tip of Trapani’s headland is the Torre del Ligny, a tower, part of the 17th century Spanish defences, that now hosts a Prehistoric Museum. With this tour you will see the ancient buildings and landmarks, such as the offshore fortresses called Torre della Colombaia and Castello del Mare (Sea Castle) and, furthermore, you will discover the several interesting churches in Trapani: the town’s restored cathedral, the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo and the Chiesa del Purgatorio, Castello di Terra and The Church of St. Julian, founded in 1080 by the will of Ruggero II. Inside don’t miss to see the fine statue of St. John the Baptist by Gagini. Then you will visit the Salt Museum (Museo del Sale), a small, but highly interesting museum set up in a 300-year old saltworker’s house: it shows the different work stages in the saltpans and the various tools adapted for its extraction and collection: windmill vanes, cog wheels, spikes and sprockets. The Saltworks (Saline) in front of the museum, successfully explain how and why the different saltpans interact, as well as describe all the phases in the cultivation and extraction of the crystallised salt. After visiting the sites you will have lunch at a local restaurant for a taste of Sicilian cuisine, wine and coffee. Next you will drive through the lovely Sicilian countryside to the town of Erice, where you will begin a walking tour of this small and quite medieval town. The town, founded in the 5th century B.C., is perched on a cliff 751 m (2463 ft) above sea level. You will visit the must-see sites of Erice including the Norman Gates to the city, the Balio gardens, the Venus Castle and the Assunta Church. You will surely have some time to spend in the town on your own – we recommend you to look for a delicious typical almond pastry – before returning to meet your driver and go back to the ship.
